Shopify, WooCommerce,Magento 2022 : Quelle plateforme e-commerce choisir ?

Aren’t all Ecommerce websites the same? Stop right there. That kind of thinking is similar to saying all apples are the same. Is a pink lady apple the same as a Fuji apple? That’s what I thought.

Sure, all Ecommerce platforms provide a content management system (CMS) with essential features for every online store. For example:

  • Product management
  • Order management
  • Multiple payment gateways
  • Sales reports
  • Analytic plugins

However, the top 3 Ecommerce platforms WooCommerceShopify  and Magento are unique in their features, functionality and service offers. Let’s take a look at what makes them different.

Overview

Shopify

  • Nowadays, when people think Ecommerce websites, the first provider that comes to mind is Shopify. Shopify is a top choice for small business owners, fledgling entrepreneurs, and advanced Ecommerce businesses who are seeking to streamline their online model through a user-friendly and adaptable interface. As a cloud based provider, Shopify is a one stop shop platform of plug-ins and all technical updates are managed by Shopify.

WooCommerce

  • Statistically, WooCommerce is the most used Ecommerce platform in the world with over 5,000,000+ live sites. Unlike Shopify, WooCommerce is not a cloud based service platform. Rather, WooCommerce is an open source WordPress (WP) plugin that enables you to create an ecommerce website while taking advantage of the WordPress backend.

Magento

  • Magento, which was acquired by Adobe in 2018, is an incredibly popular Ecommerce platform tailored more towards enterprise companies. With robust, extensive features, Magento is fully customizable to the creativity and skills of the graphic designers & developers working on the company’s website. With this customization comes the ability to scale globally. Magento is tailored towards large companies with high inventory volume.

Shopify – ★★★★

  • Shopify runs on a transparent 3 tier pricing system geared towards small business owners who are looking for a fixed cost model.
      • Basic Shopify – is best for those starting out in the Ecommerce industry. In this plan, Shopify charges a 2% fee for each sale.
      • Shopify – is best for growing businesses who are looking to obtain standard reports and start to sell internationally. In this plan, Shopify charges a 1% fee for each sale.
      • Advanced Shopify – is best for businesses that are looking to scale their sales internationally by having access to advanced reports that will help them define their sales strategy. In this plan, Shopify charges a 0.5% fee for each sale.
  • For enterprise companies or larger businesses looking to scale, Shopify does offer ShopifyPlus which starts at a minimum $2000 USD/month or a variable fee for higher volume businesses.

WooCommerce –
★★★★★

  • WooCommerce is a free, open source plug-in offered by WordPress. The only operating cost for using the WooCommerce platform is related to your domain name, SSL certificate, and website server hosting.

Magento –

  • Magento is not transparent in their pricing model. Similar to ShopifyPlus, it is variable and based on the average order value and gross merchandise value of your company. In fact, you must first inquire with a Magento sales agent to receive a pricing proposal. Magento is known to be the most costly Ecommerce platform on the market.

User Experience

Shopify – ★★★★★

  • Shopify is built with Ecommerce in mind and is easier to navigate for those who are unfamiliar with web development. Like a template, user’s can click, drag and drop, remove, or add native or third party plug-in features to their webpage. Shopify appeals to new customers as a do-it-yourself platform. However, for more robust features, it is recommended to work in partnership with an advanced developer who can implement custom requests. Shopify is a great template for beginners, but to uncover its full potential, you should partner with a team of experts.

WooCommerce –
★★★

  • For those familiar with managing their own WordPress website, WooCommerce may be an easier user-experience. However, for those without some coding experience, a developer will likely be required for more sophisticated processess.

Magento –

  • Magento is not built for the novice in mind. For enterprise companies or those with a larger budget, magento can be fully customized by a development team. However, if you have no experience with web development, Magento is not recommended.

Shopify – ★★★★★

  • With free, preset themes, users can easily create an appealing website with a little trial and error. Businesses can also opt for paid themes that match their industry profile. These professionally designed themes typically hover around the $200 range, but can vary from $150-$400 USD.

WooCommerce –
★★★★

  • In terms of design, WooCommerce is a plug-in that is adapted to your existing WordPress site and your content, information, and product listings are displayed through your current theme. WooCommerce does offer 40 themes on their theme store. In addition, thousands of themes are available through themeforest. The beauty of WordPress though is that it is fully customizable development wise and can be designed how you see it with proper planning and development.

Magento –

  • Magento marketplace does offer a limited selection of 6 basic web design themes. However, in our opinion, these designs aren’t as appealing as let’s say Shopify or other WooCommerce sites. However, most enterprise companies have their own graphic design team paired with web developers; hence, the designs can be as creative as possible. As a reference, companies like Nike use Magento.

Customer Service

Shopify – ★★★★★

  • For those diving into the Ecommerce world, Shopify offers 24/7 support for their proprietary features & plug-ins with different contact channels:
      • Live chat
      • Email
      • Phone
      • Twitter
      • However, if you decide to install a third party apps not developed by Shopify, Shopify customer support will be unable to assist you. At that point, it’s recommended to reach out to the app’s support team directly.

WooCommerce –
★★★

  • Since WooCommerce is an open source platform, their dedicated support is limited to the products sold on WooCommerce.com. However, WooCommerce does provide a documentation page that acts like a training manual and answer guide to FAQ’s. In general, since WooCommerce is such a community based platform, you can likely find many questions and answers on forums.

Magento –
★★★★★

  • With enterprise cost comes enterprise customer service. Magento maintains a knowledge base for FAQ’s in addition to live customer support.

In general, each of the top 3 leading Ecommerce platforms have their unique advantages.

  • Shopify is a great platform for those entering the Ecommerce scene or small businesses looking to scale their business through easy to use native plug-ins.
  • WooCommerce is a powerful plug-in for small and medium business enterprises that have an existing WordPress site. With WooCommerce, the ability to scale is limitless so long as you’re paired with a skilled developer.
  • Magento is best tailored for large enterprises or companies with a large amount of resources. In other words, an in-house development team focused solely on the company’s web development.

At Digitality we recommend Shopify or WooCommerce for our clients as the most practical and economical choice. These two platforms possess an extensive list of plug-ins available that can meet any small to medium business enterprise’s needs.
